Project One is worth 100 pts - 10% of the total grade.

  Successful (A - C)   Less Successful (C- and below)
Thesis (35 pts)

The successful thesis:

  • uses clear and concise language
  • demonstrates strong awareness of audience and rhetorical situation (of the advertisement AND the paper)
  • identifies the specific rhetorical aspects of the advertisement that the paper analyzes (purpose of the paper)

The less successful thesis:

  • uses vague and unclear language
  • does not demonstrate an awareness of audience and/or rhetorical situation
  • does not identify the specific rhetorical aspect of the advertisement that the paper analyzes (lacks a clear purpose)

Organization (20pts)

In a successfully organized paper:

  • Body paragraphs FULLY SUPPORT thesis and do not veer off into tangents and unrelated ideas.
  • Paragraphs are limited to DEVELOPING AND SUPPORTING A SINGLE IDEA.
  • Ideas are connected with transitions.
  • Paragraphs include a variety of basic and complex sentence structures with a minimum of error.

In a less successfully organized paper:

  • Body paragraphs are not related to the thesis.
  • There is little evidence of logical transition between and within paragraphs.
  • Paragraphs may lack clear topic sentences, fail to adequately support topic sentences, or be otherwise logically incoherent.
  • At the sentence level, the project might contain only simply structured sentences or its complex sentence structures contain considerable errors.
Audience (15 pts)

Successful papers:

  • demonstrates a strong awareness of the advertisement's audience (or specify a limited section of that audience to be analyzed in the paper)

  • are addressed to the appropriate audience: THE CLASS

 Less successful papers:

  • have a limited awareness of the advertisement's audience

  • are not clearly addressed to the class
Rhetorical Situation (20pts)

Successful papers:

  • identify rhetorical strategies/rhetorical elements in the thesis
  • analyze these rhetorical strategies in the body paragraphs
  • balances the author's own point of view with supporting evidence

Less successful papers:

  • do not identify rhetorical strategies/rhetorical elements in the thesis
  • do not adequately analyze rhetorical strategies in the body paragraphs
  • do not balance the author's own point of view with supporting evidence
Support (25 pts)

Successful papers include TWO kinds of support in body paragraphs:

  • evidence from the advertisement
  • evidence from an outside source ABOUT the rhetoric of advertising to SUPPORT THE MAJOR CLAIMS OF THE WRITER'S ARGUMENT.
  • Successful projects will also illustrate that the writer is able to distinguish credible sources from doubtful sources, and be able to accommodate and address differences, contradictions, and oversights in the sources they employ.
  • Sources will be incorporated into the writer's own arguments with ease, and sources will be documented and cited according to the standards of an academically-accepted style guide.

Less successful projects:

  • may employ sources indiscriminately or with little attention to relevance or whether the sources cited adequately support their arguments.
  • These projects might also illustrate that the writer was unable to incorporate sources into their own writing and/or failed to adequately document or cite their sources.
Participation (5 pts)
